Yurts Today

Yurts today can be separated into three main groups.  European made yurts, American made yurts, Asian yurts.

European Yurts

The UK yurt scene owes much two men, the first is Hal Wynn-Jones who was the first person to commercially make yurts in the UK.  Since this time he has trained many to make his style of "Turkic" yurts.  He is also well known for his multiple yurt structures where a number of yurts are connected together to make a bigger structure.

Secondly Paul King of Woodland Yurts, is the UK´s most prolific yurt maker.  Paul King has been making yurts since 1991, has studied yurt making in Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan and is the author of three books on the subject.   

There are many other UK and European yurt makers however one other notable yurt maker is Rob Matthews of the Yurt Workshop.  We  include the Yurt Workshop as they are the only European yurt maker who are making authentic Mongolian Ger to a very high standard. Using the ancient designs and felt their yurts are significantly different than most others making yurts in Europe.

 

In general European made yurts are canvas covered and do not include the insulting felt layer that is standard on Asian yurts.
